For those wanting a higher-volume daypack that stays low-profile and functional during your hunt, the POP-UP 40 stands ready - and it has the chops to shoulder some serious load lifting to boot. This pack's OVERLOAD feature allows hunters to instantly transform it into a bona fide meat hauler. The telescoping frame offers a hefty 80-lb. capacity that houses the bulk of the weight close to your back for exceptional comfort during long hauls back to your rig. When you need to get moving after a kill, the POP-UP 40's face compression securely stows a bow or rifle, freeing your hands for trekking poles or navigating difficult terrain. In the meantime, ample pockets and storage compartments stow gear and rations close at hand, and a combination of zippers and a drawstring shroud allows you to grab whatever you need at a moment's notice.

Solid pack - Worth every penny
Had my eye on this pack for a while and Al's had the best price so I pulled the trigger. Fortunately, shipping was super fast and arrived a day early which was perfect because I got a call to help pack out an elk that day. This pack was such a better product than my previous one. Worth the money! Couldn't be happier with the pack and with the service from Al's.

An obvious downgrade from its predecessor...
Overall, the Pop-Up 40 was a disappointment due to what I assess as a drop in material quality from the Pop-Up 38. Don't get me wrong...the pack will likely still function fine for many users, and they did address one of the biggest complaints from the last generation: The main bag flopping around on the frame. All in all though, the Pop-Up 40 feels cheaper in every way compared to its predecessor. - First, they went with a smaller-size zipper on the main bag; instead of the heavier version found on the Pop-Up 38, you now get the same size zipper on the main bag that's found on MR's auxiliary pockets, etc. That is a confidence killer for me, and I cannot understand why the designers would assume risk on the the most heavily used part of the pack. - The lumbar pad is either made from a less-dense foam than on the Pop-Up 38, or the fabric that surrounds it is more cheaply constructed (or both). - The top lid is half the size of its predecessor. I think that was also a mistake by MR--though some did apparently ask for this change. The problem is that this pack has virtually no auxiliary pockets throughout, and we just lost half of them in the new design. - The top handle has this annoying, threaded insert meant to attach to shooting-stick yokes, panheads, etc. Because of this and what I think is a less-dense handle with non-radiused edges compared to its predecessor, the handle is a lot less comfortable to use than the older version. - The locking mechanisms on the telescoping frame poles appear to be cheaper and less rugged than on the Pop-Up 38. Are they functional? Perhaps, but they are definitely not as strong. - There's a new clip design on many of the strap attachment points that uses a stainless spring-catch mechanism, and I'm not sure I like it. It's functional, but it looks to me like another cost-cutting change. I called customer service about getting replacement clips of the traditional design; not an option, and the tech told me that they'd likely be going back to the old design as the new clips aren't popular with customers. Is the Pop-Up 40 still a novel design? Sure, but I sent mine back and will continue using my Pop-Up 38. I just can't accept what's an obvious drop in quality when MR's entire product line is even more expensive than before.

Almost the perfect pack
Purchased to use during any day hunt or for when hunting in mountain areas. Very comfortable very supportive, worth the money when talking about comforting. Knocked one star for having too many clips to get through if trying to open the main pouch through the side and for not having some small organization bags in the top pouch. Would be nice to separate my truck keys, phone, and wallet from my other items like walkie-talkies, tags, battery banks etc.

So many straps
I rarely leave reviews but after this weekend I feel forced. The size and comfort is there but all these straps can go to heck. The top pocket is nice for small things and easy to access but if you need something in the main pocket quick .. forget about it. I dreaded going in to get something. The lid pocket is too short to swing out of the way and there's so many straps with different clips it's confusing and annoying. I wish I took that guys 2 star review seriously and didn't think to myself "it can't be THAT" bad" …. Guys, it's that bad.

Great bag!!! Love it.
Bought this bag a month ago. Took it to Co on late season elk hunt. Didn't get to pack an elk but packed everything else every single day for miles!! Love it. Would buy again! You won't regret it, just buy it.

Too many different buckles and odd strap routing
I really wanted to live this pack, but after a season I just can't. The main issue I have is the design of all the different straps, how they attach to the pack and their routing. For example, most other packs have quick release buckles on the side compression straps, this pack does not. So to carry a tripod on the side, you have to release the locking adjuster to loosen the straps, then slide the tripod thru the straps. To return in you side in back in thru the 2 straps, hoping they don't catch or tangle, then retighten. I do really like the small lid pocket for easy access to quickly needed items. But the main bag requires unclipping 2 straps that hold the lid, and then 2 straps that route from the pack bottom, UNDER the lid, and then swing the lid up, pull the other straps down, undo the closure string while holding the lid up because it wants to flip back down all the time, and reach into the pack and start pulling things out. This is a huge pain for me as I typically hike in and then grab my jacket when I stop to glass, and then pack the jacket before we more again. It got to the point that I just went cold when we stopped to glass because getting the tripod out was difficult enough. On the plus side we packed out 3 mule deer with this pack very comfortably, and the pack extends fairly easily, but the load shelf doesn't open up completely like some other packs although that didn't bother me, just unclip 2 clips that hold the pack to the frame, loosen the side straps and slide a quarter or 2 in and tighten them back up (same straps that hold the tripod thought so make sure everything is secure). The materials and construction are excellent. I like the ability to add an accessory to the top bar, although I didn't use it. Overall I will likely sell this pack and choose something different.

Comfortable carry
Been hunting for years with old backpacking bags thinking that dedicated hunting packs were overpriced and overhyped. Carried out my own elk as well as a few friends with my mystery ranch pop up 40 this year, and now I realize how stupid I was. Multiple big pack outs with a very heavy pack and felt like I was carrying nothing. Also easy to pack lite for long hunting days and fits well enough to not notice it's on, and lastly love the extendable frame with glassing mode, I find it very useful.

Fits me perfect!
Once I fit the pop up 40 to my body, I was very happy to discover how comfortable it is. I have taken it on a few hikes the past weeks and the pop Up 40 is a body saver.

Horrible Design - Buyer Beware
This pack is so disappointing! Mystery Ranch makes great products. This isn't one of them. The bag has so many straps that just to get into the bag you need to remove 7 straps utilizing 3 different types of buckles. There are a total of 6 different buckle types on the bag. Straps you have to remove to get into the bag include the main vertical supports that go to the top of the frame and are threaded under the lid so you have to take a lot apart just to get to the inside of your bag!!! Very inconvenient!! The inside of the bag has no other pockets so everything is on the bottom by default. Only the lid is a separate pocket that is accessible so you end up cramming everything you can in there. Once you use it, you can't return it. I had to find out the hard way. So disappointing in Mystery Ranch!!!
